Our monthly think + drink / science program transforms The Planetarium into a forum of discussion where you can grab a beer, glass of wine or a soft drink and learn about science in a relaxed, informal setting. The day’s expert gives a short presentation then opens the floor for questions and discussion.
• 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of most months.
• $5 for members of the Discovery Society; $8 for all others.
• Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis; please arrive promptly. Pre-purchased program seats will be held until 5 minutes prior to program start time ONLY, at which time they may be released for re-sale (no refunds or exchanges will be given after the start of the program).
Feb. 12: Manatees and Mermaids: A Perspective from 40 Years in the Field Studying Florida’s Beloved Marine Mammal
Dr. James “Buddy” Powell, Executive Director of Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, has spent 40 years studying and conserving manatees across their range. In this presentation, he shares myths and legends surrounding the manatee, current threats toward their survival, and a brief history of manatee research and conservation, along with some of his field experiences with manatees.
